In the seventh inning of Italy’s WBC opener, Brazil left-hander Oscar Nakaoshi threw a 2-2 splitter to Canzone that was in off the plate. Canzone turned on it and flexed his power, launching a three-run homer that soared 416 feet into the second deck in right-center field at Houston’s Daikin Park to give Italy a 6-0 lead.
Canzone also added an RBI single in the eighth inning. He finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs in Italy’s 8-0 victory.
Elsewhere in Saturday’s early WBC action, Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor and highly touted Mariners prospect Michael Arroyo each had an RBI single in the Canada-Colombia game. Arroyo put Colombia on the board with an RBI single in the third inning, while Naylor stretched Canada’s lead to 4-1 with an RBI single in the seventh. Canada went on to win 8-2.
