Mariners call up recently signed veteran, DFA Mastrobuoni

The Seattle Mariners are getting a bit more right-handed on their bench.

Veteran utility player Weston Wilson was selected from the the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers to the active roster on Friday afternoon, with fellow veteran utilityman Miles Mastrobuoni designated for assignment to make room.

Seattle’s roster is currently heavy on left-handed hitters, especially in the infield.

Wilson, who swings from the right side, is in the lineup playing third base and hitting ninth for Seattle on Friday.

The 31 year old appeared in 100 games over the previous three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, as well as 19 games earlier this year with the Baltimore Orioles. He hit a career-high five home runs whie batting .198 in 125 plate appearances in 2025, and has a .231/.348/.333 slash line for a .681 OPS with a home run in 46 plate appearances this year.

The 6-foot-3 Wilson has played every position in the big leagues besides catcher and shortstop, appearing mostly at left field, third base, second base and first base.

The Mariners signed Wilson as a minor league free agent on Sunday, two days after he elected free agency rather than accept an outright assignment from Baltimore to the minors. Wilson appeared in two games this week for the Rainiers, going 6 for 9 (.667) with a double, four runs scored, four RBIs and two stolen bases.

Mastrobuoni, 30, was in his second season with the Mariners and fifth in the big leagues, having previously played for the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays. The lefty swinger played eight games with Seattle this season after completing a full minor league rehab assignment following his recovery from a calf strain suffered while playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic.

The 5-foot-9 Mastrobuoni played at first base, second base, third base and left field in his short time up with the M’s this year. Catcher and center field are the only positions he hasn’t played in an MLB game.

Mastrobuoni hit .217 (5 for 23) with two walks, three runs and an RBI this season for Seattle. Last year, he slashed .250/.324/.296 for a .620 OPS with one homer and four doubles in 76 games with the M’s.

The AL West-leading Mariners (39-37) open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox (29-43) at 7:10 p.m. Friday night, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports starting at 6 with the pregame show.
