One night after breaking the Seattle Mariners’ all-time record for home runs by a catcher, Cal Raleigh went deep again.
He also scored from second base on a passed ball.
Yes, you read that correctly.
In the third inning of Saturday night’s game, Raleigh was on second base when Texas Rangers catcher Jonah Heim appeared to get crossed up on a 2-2 pitch from rookie starter Kumar Rocker. The ball sailed past Heim’s glove, took one bounce and then appeared to hit the “K” on the “T-Mobile Park” lettering fixed to the brick wall behind home plate.
The ball then took a massive ricochet all the way over to the Mariners’ first-base dugout, which allowed Raleigh to score standing up from second. It was part of a four-run inning for Seattle.
Raleigh then homered in his next at-bat, launching a 420-foot solo shot to straightaway center field off Rangers reliever Caleb Boushley in the fifth inning. It was Raleigh’s fourth homer of the season and his second in as many nights.

On Friday night, Raleigh hit a tiebreaking two-run blast in the eighth inning that proved to be the difference in Seattle’s 5-3 series-opening win over Texas. It was Raleigh’s 96th career home run with the Mariners, which broke the franchise’s all-time record for most homers by a catcher. Mike Zunino held the previous mark at 95.
Each of Raleigh’s past two home runs have come with one of the new torpedo bats that have taken MLB by storm. The Mariners received their first shipment of the new bats ahead of Friday’s game.
