Mariners reunite with Eugenio Suárez in trade with D-backs
The Seattle Mariners are reportedly sending first baseman Tyler Locklear and two pitching prospects to Arizona in a trade for Eugenio Suárez.

The Seattle Mariners have reunited with Eugenio Suárez just before the MLB trade deadline.
The Mariners confirmed Thursday morning that they have re-acquired the All-Star third baseman from Arizona, sending first baseman Tyler Locklear and right-handed relievers Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos to the Diamondbacks in return.

ESPN Jeff Passan was the first to report the trade Wednesday night, which initially was pending medical review after Suárez missed a game earlier this week a day after he was hit by a pitch on the finger.
The 34-year-old Suárez was thought to be the most impactful bat available at this year’s deadline. He has been one of baseball’s top power bats for more than a half-decade, with his 248 home runs since the start of 2018 tied for fifth in the majors.

The slugging third baseman earned his second All-Star nod this season and is on track for his most productive year at the plate. He’s fifth in the majors with 36 home runs and tied with Cal Raleigh for first with 87 RBIs. Suárez’s 143 wRC+ is also second among third basemen, trailing only Padres star Manny Machado.
Suárez will be a free agent at the end of this season.
Suárez, who is hitting .248 with an .896 OPS this season, helped the Mariners end their lengthy playoff drought in 2022 after arriving in a trade from the Cincinnati Reds during spring training.
He slugged 31 home runs in his first year in a Mariners uniform and amassed a .234/.327/.423 slash line with 53 doubles, 53 home runs and 183 RBIs in two seasons with the club.
Seattle traded Suárez to the Diamondbacks after the 2023 season in exchange for reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala. He is a career .248 batter with 312 home runs over 12 seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Reds, Mariners and Diamondbacks.
Suárez now factors in as the Mariners’ everyday third baseman in place of rookie Ben Williamson. Williamson entered Wednesday hitting .254 and leading the AL at his position with eight defensive runs saved, but his .312 slugging percentage and .604 OPS were each 28th among 30 primary third basemen with at least 250 plate appearances.
Locklear, a second-round pick in 2022, is the Mariners’ No. 9 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He was promoted to the big leagues for the first time this season earlier Wednesday. The 24 year old is coming off a scorching month of July in which he posted an absurd .422/.490/.807 slash line with five doubles, nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 21 July games with Triple-A Tacoma.
Locklear hit .291 with a .943 OPS, 24 doubles, 19 home runs and 82 RBIs in 98 games in Triple-A this season. He batted .156 with a .535 OPS, two home runs and three RBIs in 16 games after making major league debut last year.
Cranton, a third-round pick in 2024, is Seattle’s 16th-ranked prospect. The 24 year old has a 1.13 ERA over eight innings in eight appearances with High-A Everett this season.
Burgos, an 2019 international free agent signing, is the Mariners’ 17th-ranked prospect. After starting the year in Double-A, the 25 year old made his major league debut this season. He posted a 4.05 ERA with eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Burgos has a 0.87 ERA with 31 strikeouts over 31 innings in 25 appearances between Double-A and Triple-A.

While I'm happy that we are getting Geno back. I feel that we gave up far too much for a streaky player who could turn cold as ice, as much as he could stay hot. This has been what his career is... very streaky. We gave up one of our top position players in AAA who is 10 years younger at 24 is hitting .291 with a .943 OPS, 24 doubles, 19 home runs and 82 RBIs in 98 games this season. Locklear and Cranton, a third-rounder from2024 is our 16th-ranked prospect. He's playing very well at high A-ball Everett and that should have been enough. Burgos who is also our 17th ranked prospect in our minor league system. Geno is an excellent player who could go cold at any moment. Let's hope he stays hot and the ball he got hit with a couple of days ago doesn't hinder is play as we wind down the regular season.
