Notebook: Mariners claim reliever Edgar Olmos from Marlins

A busy day in baseball as teams are required to finalize 40-man rosters by 9 p.m. PST in order to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft. The Mariners have yet to announce their 40-man roster but they have added to it, claiming left-handed reliever Edgar Olmos off waivers from the Marlins.

The 24-year-old went 3-3 with three saves and a 4.06 ERA in 51 relief appearances between Double-A and Triple-A last year. He made five appearances in the big leagues with the Marlins in 2013, going 0-1 and posting an ERA of 7.20.

The addition of Olmos, who has one minor-league option remaining, puts the Mariners’ 40-man roster at 36.

Notes

• Again, the Mariners will have more moves today as the 40-man rosters are due tonight. Best bets for additions are catcher John Hicks and infielder Ketel Marte. The two other spots, assuming no one is subtracted, will be a little tougher to decide. I would guess that general manager Jack Zduriencik goes pitching with those spots as he has shown the preference to protect a large number of arms in the past.

• The Mariners have received the Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence with special recognition for the “Refuse to Abuse” program for Domestic Violence Prevention. Refuse To Abuse features Mariners players as role models, educating the community about available help and promoting respectful relationships to children and teenagers. The campaign includes television, radio and print ads that utilize Mariners players to deliver messages of respect and communicate that there is no excuse for domestic violence. The Mariners also operate a charity 5K run/walk that raises money for the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The Mariners and Mariners Care will receive a $10,000 grant from Major League Baseball Charities as part of this recognition.
