A new update on Mariners reliever Matt Brash’s return

Key relievers Matt Brash and Troy Taylor are both working their way back from injuries with the hope of soon returning to the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen.

Taylor began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, reaching 97.9 mph during a 19-pitch outing.

How close is Brash to beginning his rehab stint?

Prior to Wednesday’s series finale against the Detroit Tigers, Mariners manager Dan Wilson said Brash will travel with the team to the Bay Area for its weekend series against the San Francisco Giants. Wilson didn’t specify the club’s plans for Brash, but it could indicate the possibility of him beginning a rehab assignment with the Tacoma Rainiers.

The Rainiers are in Reno, Nevada, this week for a six-game series that goes through Sunday. Reno is a little over 200 miles northeast of San Francisco.

“Once we see where he’s at and get a better idea, then we’ll be able to get the plan going for him,” Wilson said.

Brash, 26, missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. The hard-throwing right-hander made his MLB debut in 2022 and had a standout 2023 campaign, posting a 3.06 ERA with 107 strikeouts over 70 2/3 innings as a high-leverage arm in Seattle’s bullpen.

Brash returned to action with a surprise appearance in the Mariners’ Cactus League finale on March 24. He threw 12 pitches and faced three batters, recording two strikeouts and a walk.
