New injuries hit Mariners’ top 2 competitors in AL West

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday because of a dislocated left shoulder.

The Athletics entered Wednesday with a 21-20 record, one game ahead of the Seattle Mariners (21-22) for first place in the AL West.

Wilson was hurt during the fifth inning of a 2-1 loss Sunday at Baltimore after diving for Gunnar Henderson’s infield single. His IL placement was retroactive to Monday.

The A’s selected the contracts of outfielder Henry Bolte and infielder Michael Stefanic from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned infielder Brett Harris to the Aviators. Right-hander Eduarniel Núñez was designated for assignment and catcher Austin Wynns cleared waivers and was released.

The 24-year-old Wilson, an All-Star last season, was the team’s first-round selection at No. 6 overall in the 2023 amateur draft. He is batting .292 with three home runs and 19 RBIs over 39 games this season.

Rangers’ big addition hurt

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers right fielder Brandon Nimmo left Tuesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the sixth inning with a sprained left ankle.

Nimmo’s left foot hit the edge of first baseman Ildemaro Vargas’ foot as he tried to leg out an infield single and he came up limping. He stayed in the game for a few pitches before he was replaced by pinch-runner Sam Haggerty.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said X-rays were negative but confirmed Nimmo had a sprained ankle and was potentially day to day going forward.

“You’ll talk to him, and he’ll try to tell you he’s going to play tomorrow,” Schumaker said. “That’s just who he is. So hopefully we dodged a bullet, which would be great, but we’ll see how he wakes up tomorrow.”

The Rangers were up 7-1 on the Diamondbacks when the injury occurred, and Nimmo went 3 for 4 with a triple. The Rangers won 7-4.

Nimmo is batting .276 this season for the Rangers with four home runs and 12 RBIs. He was acquired from the Mets in an offseason trade that sent All-Star infielder Marcus Semien to New York.

Texas (20-22) entered Wednesday trailing the Athletics 1 1/2 games in the AL West.
