Naylor held out of Mariners’ lineup for series finale vs Cardinals

Seattle Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor is out of the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals with quad tightness, manager Dan Wilson told reporters pregame.

Wilson said Naylor’s quad issue stemmed from Saturday’s game when the first baseman went 2 for 5 with two singles and two stolen bases in a wild 11-9 win at Busch Stadium that featured a combined eight home runs between the M’s and Cardinals.

With Naylor out of the lineup, Connor Joe is getting the start at first base and batting seventh against Cardinals right-hander Michael McGreevy.

Joe, a minor league free agent signing in February, provided his biggest hit in his brief time with the Mariners on Saturday, delivering a pinch-hit, two-run single in the eighth inning off Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien that tied the game at 9-9.

Joe is 2 for 10 with a walk, three strikeouts and a stolen base in four games for the M’s this season.

Naylor’s absence also means Randy Arozarena, Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone are each moving up one spot from their usual places in the lineup to fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
