Mariners trade Casey Legumina to Rays, re-acquire pitcher in return

The Seattle Mariners have made an early-season swap with one of their frequent trade partners.

Right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Tuesday, has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, as was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

In return, the Mariners are re-acquiring minor league right-handed pitcher Ty Cummings, who was sent to Tampa Bay in 2024 as part of trade that brought All-Star outfielder Randy Arozarena to Seattle.

The 24-year-old Cummings was picked by the Mariners in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Campbell University. He has made three relief appearance this season for Double-A Montgomery, allowing just one run over 5 1/3 innings for a 1.69 ERA with six strikeouts to one walk. Last season, Cummings had a 3.34 ERA in 26 games (19 starts) with Montgomery and a 2.57 ERA in three games (one start) with Triple-A Durham.

During his first stint in the Seattle organization, Cummings was a starter for the Single-A Everett AquaSox in 2023, posting a 4.17 ERA in 25 starts.

Legumina, a Gonzaga product, had a 4.63 ERA with six runs allowed over 11 2/3 innings pitched in eight appearances this season for the Mariners. The 28 year old allowed 15 hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.

Legumina pitched in Monday’s 6-3 Mariners loss against the Athletics, allowing three runs in one inning to take the loss.

Legumina pitched in 48 games for the Mariners last season, posting a 5.62 ERA over 49 2/3 innings.
