Mariners place closer Andrés Muñoz on IL, recall reliever

The Seattle Mariners placed closer Andrés Muñoz on the 15-day injured list with right knee inflammation Friday.

Right-hander Troy Taylor was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Muñoz was removed from his outing Sunday against the Colorado Rockies with the knee issue after facing three batters, which included allowing a home run and a walk.

General manager Justin Hollander on Tuesday said Muñoz could be available in a save situation that night as Seattle was opening a two-game series against the Houston Astros that held playoff implications. But the Mariners fell 7-0 Tuesday, and Muñoz didn’t pitch Wednesday during a 7-6 win over Houston in 10 innings that provided multiple high-leverage spots the right-hander could have been used in.

The IL stint will end Muñoz’s season since Seattle had just three games left to play entering Friday. An up-and-down year resulted in the two-time All-Star posting a 5-6 record, 4.24 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 89 strikeouts to 24 walks in 57 1/3 innings over 61 appearances. Muñoz was 28 of 38 save opportunities this year. His 10 blown saves are tied with Detroit’s Kyle Finnegan for the most in baseball.

Taylor is back for his second stint in the majors this year, though he hasn’t pitched in a big-league game since May of last season. In 54 appearances with Tacoma this year, he had a 1-2 record, 5.05 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 65 strikeouts to 37 walks over 57 innings.
