Mariners, Kyle Seager nearing seven-year, $100M extension

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports was the first to report and a source close to the situation has confirmed that the Mariners are on the brink of signing third baseman Kyle Seager to a seven-year, $100 million extension.

The Mariners have yet to confirm the deal, which is pending a physical.

Signing Seager, who was arbitration eligible for the first time this offseason, was a priority for Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik this winter. A source tells me the Mariners first approached Seager about an extension a year ago but the talks were tabled for the season. Seager went on to put up his best numbers as a professional, winning the Gold Glove Award and earning an All-Star nod in the process.

In addition to the recognition, Seager proved to be one of the most valuable position players in the big leagues last year, spending the majority of the season on the Wins Above Replacement leaderboards – this despite still being relatively new to third base.

When the deal becomes official, the Mariners will have three players with contracts of at least $100 million in Felix Hernandez, Robinson Cano and Seager. The deal buys out all three of Seager’s arbitration years and his first four years of free agency.
