Mariners’ Chris Iannetta working on plays at home after missed catch in Monday’s loss

As promised Monday night, catcher Chris Iannetta was on the field taking early work Tuesday after missing a catch that cost the Mariners a run in their 3-1 loss to the Indians in the series opener.

“I just missed it,” Iannetta said at his locker following the game. “I just made an error. You are going to make errors. I don’t want to do it. I’m really good back there on plays like that. I have missed three this year that have gone off my glove. One was inconsequential, the other one was a vital play and now this one tonight. I will be out there tomorrow working on it. It’s been a strength of mine and it will be going forward.”

After missing a good relay throw from Ketel Marte, Iannetta seemed stunned, staring at his glove. Surprised, no. Upset, yes.

“I’m not afraid of contact. I’ve absorbed a lot of those plays. I just missed it,” he said.

Tuesday afternoon Iannetta took balls at home plate off the fungo from third-base coach Manny Acta, who hit them not only from shortstop but from the right side as well.

Iannetta is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Indians.
