Dom Canzone hits 2 huge HRs in Mariners’ win over Dodgers

Dom Canzone answered the call for the Seattle Mariners once again.

After delivering perhaps the biggest swing of the Mariners’ season on a go-ahead three-run home run on Sunday in Texas, Canzone provided two more massive blasts to help Seattle knock off the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6 in the series opener on Tuesday night at Dodgers Stadium.

The Mariners improved to 53-55 and remained 2 1/2 games behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the American League West.

Canzone’s first big swing came while the Mariners trailed 5-4 in the sixth inning.

After the Dodgers had come back from down 4-2 to take the lead, Canzone got to a fastball at the top of the zone from Dodgers All-Star Justin Wrobleski and sent a mammoth 433-foot solo homer over the fence in straightaway center field.

In his next at-bat, Canzone took advantage of a hanging slider from Dodgers lefty Alex Vesia with a two-run shot to center field for a 7-5 lead in the eighth.

It was the first home run given up to a lefty this season by Vesia and just the second homer overall.

Both of Canzone’s came off left-handers, marking the first time he’s homered off a lefty twice in the same game during his career. He had just three career homers in 150 plate appearances southpaws entering the night.

Canzone’s fourth career multi-homer game extended his career-best home run total to 18 this season.

Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez and Rob Refsnyder also homered for Seattle, which hit a season-high homers.

Jose A. Ferrer (4-1) pitched a clean seventh inning to earn the win. Andrés Muñoz held on in the ninth to secure his 19th save after Shohei Ohtani reached third base as the tying run with no outs.
