The Seahawks’ secondary is getting thinner by the day.

Cornerback DeShawn Shead has signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Detroit Lions, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Seahawks released Shead, 28, March 10 in what was described by ESPN as a “procedural move.” According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Shead’s contract was set to toll (or, rollover to 2018) due to time missed with a torn ACL, but general manager John Schneider had already assured Shead he would be a free agent. Instead of keeping Shead signed to the same deal, the Seahawks released him to allow him to test the market.

Shead originally signed with the Seahawks in 2012 as an undrafted free agent. He spent six seasons with Seattle, recording two interceptions, one sack, and 111 tackles. Shead suffered a season-ending ACL injury in January 2016 that kept him sidelined for the bulk of his 2017 season, though he returned to action in a limited role for the Seahawks’ final two games.

The loss of Shead leaves Seattle with two starting cornerbacks from last season: second-year pro Shaquill Griffin, and Justin Coleman. With Shead gone, Seattle can still re-sign cornerback Byron Maxwell, though he’ll also be testing the market as a free agent.
