Salk: Seahawks make right move in not benching Sam Darnold
Mike Salk explains why he agrees with Seattle's decision to stick with Darnold, despite his turnover issues.
Watch: The Seahawks Shouldn't Bench Sam Darnold...Yet | 1 min
‘Bench Sam Darnold’ was the most common thing we got on our text line since the Seattle Seahawks’ loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. And believe me, I understand the sentiment.
But are you actually going to do it? Talking about it and doing it are very different things.
Seahawks not considering QB change amid Darnold’s struggles
I understand the frustration with Sam. No one’s more frustrated than me. The picks are absolutely unacceptable. You just cannot turn the ball over as often as they have and hope to beat good teams in the NFL, especially when the rest of the offense, and especially the rest of the passing game, aren’t doing a whole lot to balance it out.
But actually taking the time to bench a quarterback is a huge sea-change kind of shift that will affect not just this season, but the entire future of the organization.
It’s one thing for us to think about it and talk about it and wonder if Drew Lock would change the way these games have gone. First of all, I’m not convinced he would. I think he has some of the same problems that Sam has.
But to make that move probably means Sam is never going to be your quarterback again. It probably means you’re going to move on at the end of the year. It probably means you’re looking to draft somebody in the first round unless Drew pulls a Tom Brady and shows that he’s ready to be the next guy here and get paid himself.
I don’t think I’m ready for all of those things, to set them all in motion.
Could it be a conversation down the road if this continues? Absolutely.
Is it a conversation now? Sure, we could talk about it.
But to actually do it? No thanks. Not right now.
