Odd special teams play sparks Seahawks’ win over Cardinals

An odd special teams play helped spark the Seattle Seahawks’ to a Week 2 victory for the second year in a row.

Chazz Surratt scooped up Rashid Shaheed’s fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half and set the Seahawks up for the go-ahead score with a return into Cardinals’ territory as Seattle beat Arizona 31-7 on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

With the game tied at 7-7, Shaheed fumbled at his own 28-yard line. After the ball bounced around for a brief moment, Surratt picked it up and ran 35 yards down to the Cardinals’ 37 for what essentially ended up being a 62-yard kickoff return to open the half.

Four plays later, quarterback Drew Lock found Jaxon-Smith Njigba for a 7-yard touchdown strike to go up 14-7 with 12:27 left to play in the third quarter, their second of three TD connections of the day.

An impressive diving interception by safety Julian Love on the ensuing Arizona possession helped Seattle keep its momentum going and set up a 33-yard Jason Myers field goal, Lock and Smith-Njigba linked up for another TD early in the fourth quarter and A.J. Barner scored on a 1-yard run in the final minutes to finish off the second-half surge.

Last year, it was Seattle’s kickoff coverage unit that came up with the game-changing play on special teams in Week 2. After the Seahawks had taken a 17-14 lead of the Pittsburgh Steelers early in the fourth quarter, the Steelers let a kickoff roll into the end zone without covering it and Seattle’s George Holani dove on it for a TD.
