The Seattle Seahawks are off to a 2-0 start, and are now one of just two teams left undefeated in the NFC West after taking down division rival Arizona 31-7 on Sunday in the desert.

Mike Salk – Brock and Salk

We know coach Mike Macdonald says he wants a complementary football team. In Arizona, he got that and more.

In Macdonald’s lexicon, to be complementary means to be complete. To that end, the Seahawks certainly ran it well, threw it well, stopped both the run and pass, and utilized their special teams. And they did it while some of their top weapons played sparingly or sat out entirely.

But to most of us, complementary means using assets in a way that helps make the strongest parts of your football team achieve even greater results. The defense is the undisputed best unit on this team. But they get better when you run it as well as the Seahawks did on Sunday. And they get even better when they are barely on the field.

And when that defense gets the ball back quickly, it forces the opponents to keep their defense on the field even longer, weakening that group in the process. That’s how you outscore your opponent 24-0 in the second half. In fact, through two games, the Seahawks have won the second half battle 37-3. Insane.

There will be plenty of praise for quarterback Drew Lock, and it is all deserved. He made big throws and kept the ball out of harm’s way. He was the perfect complement to a defense and running game that was simply too much for Arizona to handle.

Absolute domination!

First of all, as exciting and effective as the offense was, especially in the second half, all praise should start with the Seahawks’ defense. Holding the Cardinals to seven points and 150 total yards on their home field is absolutely amazing.

The Seahawks’ defense led the NFL last season in points allowed at 17.2 per game. In the first two games of this season, they’ve allowed a total of 17 points.

You can’t help but feel great for Drew Lock, who has been an absolute pro as a backup, a fantastic teammate by all accounts, and is truly taking advantage of the opportunity he has been given. After the huge 82-yard touchdown connection to JSN, it was a pretty slow first half. Watching what he and this offense did in the second half was impressive, to say the least.

After next week, the Seahawks’ schedule gets much tougher. Banking these wins right now considering the injuries they’re dealing with is a big deal.
