Late in the first quarter of the Seattle Seahawks’ season-opening 13-10 win over the New England Patriots last week, rookie running back Jadarian Price took a first-down handoff and raced around a wall of blockers to the right side for a 12-yard gain.

It showed the burst and explosion that helped make Price a first-round draft pick.

It also showed sound blocking from Seattle’s offensive line, which has high expectations this fall after returning all five starters from last year’s strong unit.

The latter particularly stood out to Seahawks Radio Network analyst and former NFL offensive lineman Ray Roberts, who praised the O-line’s run blocking during an appearance Thursday on Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy.

The Seahawks ranked eighth in ESPN’s run block win rate for Week 1, which helped create space for Price to rush for 52 yards on 10 carries in his NFL debut.

“In the run game, they were capturing the edge faster than they ever did last year,” Roberts said. “I mean, Price just had to like put his track shoes on and sprint to the edge and the space was there. So I think even with them having more opportunities to run block, they’ll create some more lanes.”

Roberts also thought Seattle’s O-line acclimated well in pass protection, considering that the offense had to adjust on the fly after quarterback Sam Darnold’s early injury exit. Backup QB Drew Lock was sacked only once in 24 dropbacks.

“I felt for what they were asked to do and the way the game plan kind of changed on them, I thought they did a really good job,” Roberts said.

Roberts thinks Seattle’s O-line will get another good challenge from the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals limited Los Angeles Chargers running backs to just 3.5 yards per carry during their 26-14 win in Week 1.

“They do a really good job of getting off blocks at the line of scrimmage,” Roberts said. “And so the double teams are going to have to be tight. The cutoffs on the backside are going to have to be tight. … Being able to secure these double teams and not allowing them to penetrate the line of scrimmage is going to be vital for the running game.”
