An Everett AquaSox standout headlines the list of eight Seattle Mariners prospects heading to the Arizona Fall League next month.

Infielder Brandon Eike, who won Northwest League Player of the Month honors for August with Everett, will be one of three M’s hitting prospects joining the Peoria Javelinas, along with catchers Matthew Ellis and Boston Smith.

Seattle will also send pitchers Ty Cummings, Reid Easterly, Jose Geraldo, Calvin Schapira and Adam Smith, and hitting coach Jordan Cowan to the Javelinas.

The 24-year-old Eike slashed .295/.357/.535 for an .892 OPS with 24 home runs, 79 RBIs, and 38 walks to 119 strikeouts in 111 games for the High-A AquaSox this season. A 2024 13th-round pick out of Virginia Commonwealth by the M’s, this was Elke’s second full year with Everett.

The 23-year-old Smith, who was announced for the AFL last week, was acquired by Seattle ahead of the trade deadline from the White Sox in the Luis Castillo deal. He has garnered attention with 31 homers combined over three levels in his first pro season. He was a sixth-round MLB Draft pick out of Wright State in 2025 by the Washington Nationals.

Smith, the No. 13 Mariners prospect per MLB Pipeline, is the only player ranked among Seattle’s top 30 prospects that is headed to the AFL.

The Javelinas will also feature prospects from the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals. Outfielder Ty Peete, who was the No. 30 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Mariners and was included in Seattle’s offseason trade for All-Star utility player Brendan Donovan, will be part of the Cardinals contingent on the Peoria roster.

Also of note, Gunnar Buhner will represent the Athletics as a coach on the Mesa Solar Sox staff. An Issaquah native and Mt. Si High School product, he is the son of Mariners Hall of Fame outfielder Jay Buhner. Gunnar Buhner has been with the A’s since 2023, and this year served as manager of the ACL Athletics in the Arizona Complex League.

What is the Arizona Fall League?

Each MLB team is sending eight prospects this year to the AFL, which plays a regular season from October to mid-November and ends with two days of playoffs. There is also an annual Home Run Derby and “Fall Stars” game towards the end of the regular season.

The AFL is essentially a showcase league for baseball’s premier prospects. Per the official Arizona Fall League website: “Thirty-five percent of all players named to the 2026 MLB All Star Game in Philadelphia were AFL alums (27 of 77). Ten out of 20 players in the starting lineups for that game (starting pitchers and DH included) once played in the Fall League.”
