M’s rookie Michael Arroyo blasts first career HR in rout of A’s

When Michael Arroyo’s playing days are over, he’ll have an interesting answer to give when asked about a couple of his major league firsts.

The Seattle Mariners rookie checked in with his first big-league hit and later blasted his first career home run during the Mariners’ 19-1 rout of the Athletics at Sutter Health Park – the temporary home of the A’s – in West Sacramento, Calif. However, it wasn’t the first time he had a hit or a home run at the ballpark this year.

Arroyo got his first hit in the top of the fourth inning with a well-struck leadoff double to left field off A’s right-hander Seth Johnson. He came around to score in the next at-bat on a single from Weston Wilson that gave the M’s a 6-0 lead.

The home run came with two outs in the seventh inning when Arroyo turned on a sinker on the inside part of the plate from A’s right-hander Joey Estes and sent it well beyond the fence in left field a 10-1 lead. The solo shot traveled 410 feet and came off the bat at 103.6 mph.

Arroyo added an RBI single in the eighth inning and sac fly in the ninth. He finished 3 for 4 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored.

As to how Arroyo had already collected a hit and a homer at Sutter Health Park this year?

The ballpark is the normal home the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Arroyo played a series there last month with Triple-A Tacoma where he appeared in six games and had five hits and a home run.

Saturday was just the third appearance and second start for Arroyo since he was promoted from Triple-A last Sunday. He’s the Mariners’ third-ranked prospect and No. 44 in baseball, per MLB Pipeline.
