Instant Reaction: Seahawks open with win in Super Bowl rematch

The voices of Seattle Sports weigh in on the Seahawks holding off the Patriots 13-10 in the NFL season opener.

The Seattle Seahawks are 1-0 in their attempt to run it forward as defending Super Bowl champs.

Even with starting quarterback Sam Darnold injured on the first series of the season, the Hawks rallied behind backup QB Drew Lock, led by a three-interception night for the Dark Side defense as they beat the New England Patriots 13-10 in a rematch of the title game from February.

As we do after each Seahawks game, here is the instant reaction from the voices of Seattle Sports, who will have you covered all day Thursday to break down the game beginning at 6 a.m., including the Mike Macdonald Show at 9:30 a.m. with the head coach.

Mike Salk – Brock and Salk (6-10 a.m.)

I’m guessing you didn’t have any part of that game on your list of predictions – other than maybe the team that finished on top.

No Sam Darnold after the first drive. An offense completely shut down in the first half. Serious issues with the offensive operation that led to a dangerous situation late. And ultimately, an all-time brainfreeze moment from Drake Maye that allowed the Seahawks to clinch their first victory of the year.

Sometimes you just need to survive in the NFL, and that is exactly what the Seahawks did. And they did it thanks to the big-play ability of their best unit: that defense that lead the league last year in scoring.

Week 1 of the NFL season tends to give us more red herrings than data points. But three big interceptions (from Nehemiah Pritchett, Julian Love and Josh Jobe) erased whatever other issues the Hawks had. Now they get an extra long week to get those fixed.

Stacy Rost – Bump and Stacy (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

Seahawks get their first win thanks, once again, to stellar defensive play. And credit to them for how long they were on the field. Drake Maye gets desperate and Josh Jobe makes him pay.

Mike Lefko – Wyman and Bob (2-7 p.m.)

The Seahawks defense does it again! This one goes to the secondary, which locked up the Patriots receivers all night and frustrated Drake Maye into terrible decisions in the second half.

Credit to Nehemiah Pritchett for stepping up with a couple of key pass breakups and his first interception, which helped turn the tide in the second half.

The game plan goes out the window when your starting QB gets hurt five plays into the season, so you kind of give first-time offensive coordinator Brian Fleury a mulligan on his first attempt as a play caller. But it was a rough night all around for the offense. Way too many penalties and sloppy football, which looked like an unfortunate byproduct of the starters not playing in the preseason.

The long-term prognosis on Sam Darnold is the only thing that matters now though. The Seahawks can’t get to where they need to go this season unless he is healthy.
