Seattle Mariners call up top prospect Michael Arroyo

Michael Arroyo is the latest highly-ranked Seattle Mariners prospect to receive his first call up to the big leagues.

Top prospects among Seattle Mariners’ August minor league standouts

Arroyo was selected from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Athletics at T-Mobile Park. Veteran infielder Patrick Wisdom has been optioned to Tacoma and right-handed reliever Nick Davila has been transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 28-man and 40-man rosters, respectively.

Arroyo is in the lineup for Sunday’s 1:10 p.m. game against the Athletics as the second baseman, hitting eighth in the lineup. He will be the fourth highly-touted M’s prospect to make his MLB debut for the team this season, following shortstop Colt Emerson, left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson and outfielder Lazaro Montes.

The addition of Arroyo comes as the Mariners are trying to avoid a devastating four-game sweep against one of the worst teams in baseball in order to keep their slim playoffs alive.

Arroyo will make his debut against A’s left-handed starter Gage Jump. Arroyo has been strong against both right-handed and left-handed pitching in the minors, but he has been even slightly better against southpaws this year with a .291/.374/.473 slash line for an .847 OPS.

The 21-year-old Arroyo is the No. 45 overall prospect in baseball as ranked by MLB Pipeline, and the third of six M’s prospects currently ranked in Pipeline’s top 100. He is Seattle’s top hitting prospect.

A second baseman and left fielder, the 5-foot-10 Arroyo has slashed .283/.359/.471 for an .830 OPS with 18 home runs, 23 doubles, five triples and 17 stolen bases over 114 games combined between Double-A and Triple-A in 2026.

The Mariners signed Arroyo in 2022 as an international free agent out of Colombia. He played for his home country in the World Baseball Classic this spring, going 4 for 13 (.308) with three walks in four games.

Arroyo said he first learned of his promotion via a phone call from his longtime minor league teammate Lazaro Montes, who was called up to the Mariners from Tacoma on Sept. 1.

“You never stop trying to believing in yourself,” Arroyo said through an interpreter. “You have that confidence in yourself and in your game. And thank God it was able to happen.”

Mariners manager Dan Wilson said he was excited to see what the team has in Arroyo.

“I love the fact that he’s a type of hitter that will use the whole field,” Wilson said. “He has a really good sense for putting up a good at-bat.”

Wisdom, 35, leads the Triple-A Pacific Coast League with 32 homers this season despite playing just 69 of the Rainiers’ 137 games. In 19 games with the Mariners, he is 5 for 47 (.106) with one homer and one double.

The 27-year-old Davila is a rookie, having appeared in 24 games for Seattle with a 4.94 ERA. He landed on the 15-day IL last Monday with an SC join sprain.
