Mariners Minor League Notebook: Prospect Felnin Celesten likely out for season

SEATTLE – Seattle Mariners shortstop prospect Felnin Celesten is likely out for the season with what general manager Justin Hollander on Thursday described as a minor groin issue.

Celesten was placed on the 7-day injured list by Double-A Arkansas on Wednesday.

“It’s nothing serious, it’s nothing long-term. But just given where they’re at on their calendar – it’s probably two weeks down – so he will likely miss the rest of the season,” Hollander said.

The Travelers finish their regular season next Sunday.

Celesten was enjoying a breakout year before the injury. In 111 games across High-A and Double-A, he slashed .273/.363/.458 with 16 homers, 24 doubles, four triples, 25 stolen bases, 54 walks and 120 strikeouts. His year included a 25-game hitting streak with High-A Everett.

“He had an absolutely phenomenal season, and I know he really wanted to get through the whole season and play almost every day and sort of have that be a goal or accomplishment that he succeeded this year,” Hollander said. “Unfortunately, there’s just no sense in pushing it.”

Injuries limited Celesten to just 34 games (all of which came in 2024) over his first two seasons of pro baseball after signing with the M’s as an international free agent in 2023.

Celesten is the Mariners’ fourth-ranked prospect and No. 50 in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline.

Brennan Davis out for season

Outfielder Brennen Davis will miss the rest of the season after tweaking his oblique in the batting cages. Davis, who last played in a game for Triple-A Tacoma on May 29, was working his way back from a hamstring injury.

The Mariners recalled Davis from Triple-A on Thursday and placed him on the 60-day injured list to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Stuart Fairchild.

Davis, a former top prospect, was a spring training standout for the Mariners after joining the team on a minor-league deal. He hit .353 with a 1.274 OPS, four homers and four doubles in 15 Cactus League games.

Two players earn monthly awards

Two Mariners farmhands received monthly honors for August in their respective leagues Thursday.

Everett AquaSox infielder Brandon Eike was named the Northwest League Player of the Month, and Inland Empire 66ers left-hander Jack Bowery was named California League Pitcher of the Month.

Eike, 24, racked up 33 base hits while batting .339 with a 1.089 OPS, four homers, 11 doubles and 24 RBIs in 24 August games. The 2024 13th-round pick is hitting .291 with an .893 OPS and 24 homers on the season.

Bowery, 23, won all for of his starts in August, posting a 1.23 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with 20 strikeouts to four walks over 22 innings. The Northeastern product has a 7-5 record with a 3.88 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 94 strikeouts to 19 walks over 95 innings.
