Mariners OF Lazaro Montes exits game after collision with wall

X-rays came back negative on rookie Lazaro Montes’ left hip after he exited early during Friday night’s 7-6 loss to the Athletics, Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson told reporters postgame.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Montes was pulled from the game after he crashed into the wall in right-center field at T-Mobile Park trying to track down a flyball off the bat of A’s third baseman Zack Gelof in the top of the fifth inning. Montes was unable to make the catch and flipped the ball to nearby center fielder Julio Rodríguez for the throw to the infield.

Montes laid on the ground for an extended period before being helped to his feet by Rodríguez. He was checked on by Wilson and a head trainer Kyle Torgerson and briefly remained in the game. But when the Mariners made a pitching change later in the inning, Montes was also removed for defensive replacement Taylor Ward.

“We’ll see how he is in the morning and see if anything else is further needed at this point,” Wilson.

The play resulted in a tiebreaking triple that put the Athletics ahead 6-5.

The 21-year-old Montes, who hit 38 homers in the minors this season, was promoted to the majors on Tuesday when rosters expanded to 28 players. He’s batted .273 (3 for 11) with a home run and three RBIs in first three MLB games. Montes the No. 56 prospect in baseball, per MLB Pipeline.
