After he shared hugs with teammates, including the longest one with longtime teammate and fellow top prospect Michael Arroyo, infielder Leo Rivas urged the Cuban-born Montes to give a speech to the team in English.
“This is amazing for me,” the 21-year-old Montes says in the clip. “Thank you for everyone. I learned from everybody here. And, I mean, I can’t even speak, man. But I love everybody, I love you.”
News of Montes’ promotion to the Mariners was first reported Sunday. The move was made official on Tuesday morning, the same day MLB active rosters were increased from 26 to 28 players for the final month of the season.
Montes is in the lineup for his MLB debut in Tuesday’s 3:45 p.m. game at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox, hitting seventh in the batting order and serving as the designated hitter. Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports of the game starts at 2:30 with the pregame show.
