Seahawks lose 2nd-year edge rusher to waiver claim

The Atlanta Falcons claimed second-year edge rusher Jared Ivey off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, according to The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero.

The Seahawks waived the 6-foot-6, 274-pound Ivey during Sunday’s roster cutdown from 91 to 53 players.

Of the players Seattle waived, Ivey was the only one who was claimed by another team ahead of Monday’s 10 a.m. waiver-claim deadline. That means the rest of the Seahawks’ waived players are now free to sign with any team, including Seattle’s practice squad.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks didn’t claim any players off waivers. In total, there were 29 waiver claims across the NFL on Monday.

Ivey, who went undrafted out of Mississippi, appeared in two games for Seattle last season, logging 15 defensive snaps and 10 special teams snaps. Despite the limited playing time, Ivey’s potential upside as a developmental prospect compelled the Seahawks to stash him on their 53-man roster all season as waiver-claim protection.

This preseason, Ivey had a quiet first two games before recording two quarterback hits and a pass deflection last Friday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. But ultimately, it wasn’t enough to keep Seattle from exposing him to waivers this time around.
