A second Mariners top prospect promoted to Triple-A

Lazaro Montes isn’t the only top Seattle Mariners prospect making the jump from the Double-A Arkansas Travelers to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. Second baseman/outfielder Michael Arroyo is joining him in being promoted, the M’s announced Monday morning.

Arroyo is the No. 43 overall prospect and No. 4 Mariners prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline.

It was reported Sunday night by baseball reporter Francys Romero that Montes had received a call up to Tacoma after hitting 25 home runs in 79 games this season for Arkansas. MLB.com Mariners reporter Daniel Kramer reported late Sunday night that Arroyo was joining Montes.

The 21-year-old Arroyo has slashed .287/.364/.456 for an .820 OPS with 10 home runs, 12 doubles, 40 RBIs, 46 runs, 13 stolen bases and 24 walks to 49 strikeouts in 65 games for Arkansas this year.

Arroyo has a hit in 11 of his last 12 games, with six multi-hit games over that stretch. That includes a 4-for-5 performance with a homer on Saturday against the Springfield Cardinals. His first three hits in that game came against former Mariners first-round pick Jurrangelo Cijntje, who went to the Cardinals organization in the offseason trade that brought All-Star utility man Brendan Donovan to the M’s.

In five games in July, Arroyo has hit 11 for 23 (.478) with two homers, a double, a .520 on-base percentage and 1.303 OPS.

An international free agent signing by the Mariners out of Colombia in 2022, Arroyo represented his home country in the World Baseball Classic this spring,  going 4 for 13 (.308) with two steals, three walks and a .500 on-base mark in four games.

The 5-foot-10 Arroyo mainly played second base and shortstop in previous seasons, as well as a handful of games at third base. This season, however, he has split his time between second base and left field as the Mariners have looked for him to add positional flexibility with youngsters Cole Young and Colt Emerson now playing up the middle in the big league infield.

The promotions of Arroyo and Montes make them the only players on the Tacoma roster ranked in the Mariners’ top 15 by MLB Pipeline. Prior to the promotions, Arkansas had all of Seattle’s top four prospects, headlined by left-handed pitcher Kade Anderson (No. 1) and right-handed pitcher Ryan Sloan (No. 2).

Arroyo and Montes could make their Rainiers debuts Tuesday when the team opens a series in Las Vegas. Their first opportunity to play a home game at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma will be Friday, July 17 against Oklahoma City in the first game after the All-Star break.
