Ichiro to headline Mariners Alumni Home Run Derby at T-Mobile Park

As part of the Seattle Mariners’ 50 Seasons Celebration, the team has announced the first-ever Mariners Alumni Home Run Derby, which will take place after the Friday, Aug. 7 game against the Rays on at T-Mobile Park.

Ken Griffey Jr., a three-time MLB Home Run Derby champion, will serve as commissioner for the alumni derby.

The Seattle Mariners’ top AL West competition is changing

Nelson Cruz and Jay Buhner will captain teams made up of former Mariners. The participants will be headlined by Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki, and the field will also include former M’s players Mike Cameron, Bucky Jacobsen, Ryon Healy, Stefen Romero, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Austin Nola.

Ichiro and Cameron maintain roles in the Mariners organization, Healy and Rowland-Smith are broadcasters with the team, and Nola is in his first year as Seattle’s bullpen coach.

Jacobsen, Healy and Romero all had Pacific Northwest ties prior to their time with the M’s. Jacobsen starred at Hermiston High School in Oregon and Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho, while Healy and Romero played in college for the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers, respectively.

“It’s always great being back in Seattle, but the 50 Seasons celebration is going to be on another level,” Buhner said. “I think I can speak for all of our players, past and present, when I say this city and these fans are special. It’s going to be awesome to have all the guys back in town for the weekend, and hopefully our derby participants can put on a good show to start things off on Friday night.”

Fans with tickets to the Aug. 7 game will have access to the derby and have the opportunity to win special prizes with targets placed throughout the field.

The Mariners’ 50 Seasons Celebration Weekend will take place Aug. 7-9.
