Seattle Mariners detail injury concerns with Julio and J.P.

The Seattle Mariners beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-0 on Monday night to move back into first place in the AL West, but the night wasn’t without its concerns.

Reds’ epic slight of Cal Raleigh may have fixed him

Just prior to the game, infielder J.P. Crawford was scratched from the lineup. And during the game, Julio Rodríguez was pulled minutes after he he drove in the first run of the night.

Mariners manager Dan Wilson shared after the game what is going on with both players.

With Rodríguez, he was lifted in a late decision after the Mariners went out to the field in the top of the sixth inning in a bit of a precautionary measure. On his RBI infield single in the bottom of the fifth, an errant throw by Cincinnati shortstop Elly de la Cruz hit him on his left upper leg. That combined with the jarring nature of the close play at first base coming in just the third game since Rodríguez returned from a stint on the injured list for a concussion was enough reason for the Mariners to play it safe with him for the rest of the game.

While Rodríguez has also dealt with some hamstring issues this season, Wilson said there was no concern of a strain.

“He’s good,” Wilson said. “Julio busting down the line, got the ball off the leg. We kinda had to make a quick decision and just thought that it was the best moment there just coming off what he’s coming off of to get him out and see how he is tomorrow. … Kinda hit the bag hard and the ball hit him, and it was just a good moment there to make a decision to give him a minute.”

As for Crawford, he is day-to-day with wrist soreness, Wilson said. Crawford, the Mariners’ usual leadoff hitter, has been Seattle’s primary third baseman for the past month but was set to start back at his old position of shortstop on Monday, with Colt Emerson set to get the day off on his 21st birthday. But when Crawford was scratched, Emerson was inserted at short and All-Star left fielder Randy Arozarena was moved up to the leadoff spot. Emerson went 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI sacrifice fly, and Arozarena went 2 for 3 with a run and reached base four times in Monday’s victory.

The Mariners continue their three-game series with the Reds at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports starting at 5:30 with the pregame show.
