Mariners taking it slow with Julio, J.P. after injury scares

The Seattle Mariners are holding team stalwarts Julio Rodríguez and J.P. Crawford out of the lineup Tuesday after both had injury scares the day before.

With the pair on the bench, the Mariners lineup will start with second baseman Cole Young leading off and All-Star left fielder Randy Arozarena hitting. Crawford and Rodríguez typically hit first and second in the order.

Weston Wilson will play third base in Crawford’s place, and Victor Robles will patrol center field in place of Rodríguez a day after racking up four hits.

The 31-year-old Crawford was a late scratch from Monday’s lineup with a wrist issue. Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports reported Tuesday that Crawford tweaked the wrist on a swing during batting practice.

Rodríguez left the Mariners’ win over the Reds on Monday night in the sixth inning, shortly after he drove in a run on an infield single where he ran hard to first base and was hit on the upper left leg by an errant throw from Cincinnati shortstop Elly de la Cruz. Just like when the Mariners pulled Rodríguez from Monday’s game, they are being cautious as Rodríguez is just three days removed from his return from a two-week injured list stint with a concussion.

The Mariners exploded for six runs in the seventh inning of their 8-0 victory over Cincinnati on Monday night, which was their third straight win and vaulted them a half-game ahead of the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West.

Elsewhere in the Mariners organization, 2025 All-Star utility man Brendan Donovan will continue his rehab assignment in Everett with the Single-A AquaSox. Donovan, who is working his way back from a left groin strain, will lead off and play left field for Everett after playing second base Friday and serving as the designated hitter Sunday for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers earlier in his rehab assignment.

Donovan was Seattle’s primary third baseman to begin the season, but Crawford has established himself as the Mariners’ starter at the position after changing spots in June following the arrival of rookie shortstop Colt Emerson to the big leagues.
