Mariners go without Refsnyder again vs LHP in finale vs Braves

The Seattle Mariners are facing a left-handed starting pitcher in Wednesday’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves, but one of their key bats against southpaws is again sitting.

Rob Refsnyder is out of the lineup for the 1:10 p.m. game despite Atlanta starting veteran lefty Martín Pérez on the mound. Refsnyder did not play last Friday when the Royals started a left-hander, with manager Dan Wilson saying at the time that Refsnyder was day-to-day with some “minor ailments.”

The decision to keep Refsnyder on the bench may have to do with the fact that All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh is serving as the designated hitter again in his second game back after missing three with side soreness.

The 35-year-old Refsnyder, who is known for his ability as a right-handed bat to hit left-handed pitching, has played each of the last four days, though he started only one of those games and has not played in the field since April 27. Refsnyder, who typically bats leadoff when the Mariners face lefties, is 6 for 43 (.140) with two home runs and a .487 OPS in 21 games this season.

Shortstop J.P. Crawford, who homered in each of the first two games of the series, is leading off for the M’s on Wednesday.

With Raleigh as the DH and Mitch Garver having caught a night game on Tuesday, Jhonny Pereda is starting at catcher Wednesday for Seattle.

As for the Braves, their lineup includes rookie shortstop Jim Jarvis, who was called up Wednesday and will be making his MLB debut.

The M’s (17-20) could steal the series from the MLB-leading Braves (26-11) with a win Wednesday after the two teams split the first two games.

The Mariners will be off Thursday, then open a seven-game road trip at 4:40 p.m. Friday in Chicago against the White Sox.
