Wyman and Bob: Seahawks’ tight-knit culture is real

In the immediate aftermath of Sam Darnold’s lowest point of the season – a nightmare four-interception performance that sunk the Seattle Seahawks in a 21-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 11 – linebacker Ernest Jones IV stepped up to the press conference podium and delivered an impassioned defense of his quarterback.

It was a moment that came to epitomize the tight-knit brotherhood of this particular Seahawks team.

And as Bob Stelton and former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman discussed on Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob, that strong culture is part of the reason the Seahawks are now NFC champions and headed to their first Super Bowl in 11 years.

“The genuine nature of their relationship in that locker room – it’s not lip service,” Stelton said. “You can kind of tell when there’s some chaos behind the scenes, but they’ll come out to the media, and hey, we’re all here together. You can kind of hear it. You can kind of see it.

“This is real.”

Wyman, who spends a lot of time around the team as a Seahawks Radio Network analyst, said the camaraderie of this year’s group is noticeably different than previous teams.

Wyman credits second-year head coach Mike Macdonald, general manager John Schneider and Darnold for helping instill that culture.

“It took awhile for Mike to kind of build that, and then for John Schneider to get the right people in there,” Wyman said. “And so he brings in Sam Darnold, who is just the most humble guy in the world. I mean, everybody loves him.

“They built a culture where they care about each other,” he added. “And that obviously sounds very corny, but it works. And I think maybe people will stop texting into our show saying, it doesn’t matter if he’s a nice guy or not. Yes, it does. It does matter, because it’s the ultimate team game.”
