On to the Super Bowl! Seattle Seahawks win NFC title

For the fourth time in franchise history and first time in over a decade, the Seattle Seahawks are headed to the Super Bowl.

The Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 for the NFC Championship at Lumen Field on Sunday, clinching their spot in Super Bowl 60 on Feb. 8 against the AFC champions, the New England Patriots.

Quarterback Sam Darnold answered the questions about his ability in big games, throwing for 346 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions on 25-of-36 passing. NFL-leading wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba shined like he had all season, making 10 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown. And Seattle’s “Dark Side” defense stood tall in a scoreless fourth quarter to seal the victory.

In Seattle’s return to the Super Bowl after 11 years, it will get an opportunity at retribution against the Patriots, who beat the Seahawks the last time they made it to the title game on a last-minute interception in the end zone in Super Bowl 49.

The Seahawks beat a pair of division rivals in the postseason to punch their ticket to the title game. Eight days before their win over the Rams, they blasted the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Divisional Round 41-6, also at Lumen Field.

Now Seattle could get a chance to celebrate a championship on the 49ers’ own home field, as the Super Bowl will be in Santa Clara, Calif., at Levi’s Stadium. The other time the Seahawks and Patriots played in the postseason, it was at the home of another NFC West rival – State Farm Stadium, where the Arizona Cardinals play.

The Seahawks, who finished with a franchise-record 14 wins in the regular season, continued their streak of reaching the Super Bowl in every season where they took the No. 1 seed from the NFC into the playoffs. Seattle was also the top seed in the conference when it won the NFC title in the 2005, 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Like Seattle, the Patriots went 14-3 in the regular season. New England is set for its 12th Super Bowl appearance, which is four more than any other team in NFL history. They have won six Super Bowls, tied for the most with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Both Seattle and New England are led by successful coaches who have been hired in recent years, with the Patriots’ Mike Vrabel in his first season coaching the team he previously played linebacker for, and the Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald in his second season following a successful tenure as Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator.

The Super Bowl is set for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, Feb. 8, with the television broadcast airing on NBC. Seahawks Radio Network coverage of the game featuring former Seahawks players Steve Raible and Dave Wyman on the call will be available on Seattle Sports 710 AM, KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM, and the Seattle Sports, KIRO Newsradio and official Seahawks apps.
