Seahawks Inactives: Devon Witherspoon out vs Steelers

The Seattle Seahawks will indeed be without two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon for Sunday’s Week 2 road matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Seahawks elevate safety, nose tackle from practice squad

Witherspoon was designated among the Seahawks’ inactives on Sunday morning after being listed as doubtful with a knee injury on Friday’s game status report.

Witherspoon appeared to hurt his knee when he collided with safety Coby Bryant on Josh Jobe’s interception midway through the fourth quarter of last week’s season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Witherspoon later returned for the final defensive series and ended up playing all 76 of Seattle’s defensive snaps, but he didn’t practice this week, according to the team’s practice report.

Also inactive is rookie third-string quarterback Jalen Milroe, who will serve as Seattle’s emergency third quarterback. Milroe, who Seattle has planned to use as a change-of-pace weapon in specialty packages, played only one snap last week – running up the middle for a 1-yard gain on the opening series.

The Seahawks’ other inactives are rookie safety Nick Emmanwori, undrafted rookie edge rusher Jared Ivey, undrafted rookie edge rusher Connor O’Toole, rookie offensive lineman Mason Richman and undrafted rookie tight end Nick Kallerup. Emmanwori was ruled out on Friday after suffering a high-ankle sprain on the opening defensive series against the 49ers.

With Witherspoon’s status in question, the Seahawks signed veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin from their practice squad to their 53-man roster on Thursday. Josh Jobe and Riq Woolen are expected to be the two starting cornerbacks in Seattle’s base defense, with either Griffin or Nehemiah Pritchett serving as the third cornerback in nickel sets. Seattle also has recent waiver claim Derion Kendrick as its fifth cornerback.

With Emmanwori out, the Seahawks elevated safety D’Anthony Bell from the practice squad on Saturday. Bell and Ty Okada are Seattle’s two options on Sunday to fill Emmanwori’s role as the third safety behind starters Julian Love and Coby Bryant.
