Seahawks sign CB Shaquill Griffin back onto 53-man roster

Sep 11, 2025, 3:23 PM

Former Pro Bowl cornerback Shaquill Griffin is in line to play his first regular season game for the Seattle Seahawks in almost five years.

But it’s not a good sign for the state of that position group for Week 2.

Stacy Rost: Three big questions for Seattle Seahawks in Week 2

The Seahawks signed the 30-year-old Griffin off of their practice squad and onto their 53-man roster Thursday. To make room, wide receiver Cody White was waived, but he was immediately signed to the practice squad as he is not subject to waivers as a vested veteran.

The addition of Griffin gives the Seahawks extra depth and veteran experience at cornerback, and they may need it Sunday at Pittsburgh as two-time Pro Bowl corner Devon Witherspoon did not practice Wednesday due to a knee injury.

Griffin signed with Seattle as a free agent this offseason and made the team’s initial 53-man roster out of training camp, but he was soon after released and subsequently signed to the practice squad.

A third-round draft pick by Seattle in 2017, Griffin started 53 games over four seasons with the Seahawks and made the Pro Bowl in 2019. He played for four separate teams over the past four seasons. In 2024, he played in all 17 games for the Minnesota Vikings last year, starting three and making two interceptions and six pass breakups.

White, a sixth-year veteran, played five snaps on offense in Seattle’s Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He also returned a pair of kicks, including one return that 36 yards.

The Seahawks (0-1) will play DK Metcalf, Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers (1-0) at 10 a.m. Sunday. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at 7 a.m. with the pregame show.
