Seattle Mariners Roster Move: Lefty returns to bullpen

Jul 11, 2025, 2:07 PM

A local product is returning to the Seattle Mariners’ bullpen for the final series before the MLB All-Star break.

The Mariners have recalled veteran left-handed reliever Tayler Saucedo from Triple-A Tacoma ahead of Friday’s 4:05 p.m. road game against the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Saucedo takes the place of right-hander Carlos Vargas, who will be out of action for a happy reason as he goes on the paternity list. That puts Vargas on track to rejoin the team at least by the start of the second half next Friday, July 18 at home against Houston, if not by the end of the series this weekend in Detroit.

Though born in Hawaii, the 32-year-old Saucedo grew up in the Puget Sound area, attending Tahoma High School in Maple Valley as well as Tacoma Community College. He was drafted in the 21st round of the 2015 MLB Draft by Toronto out of Tennessee Wesleyen University.

Saucedo has made 109 of his 142 career MLB appearances for the Mariners, including four this season. Though he has a 9.82 ERA this year for Seattle in 3 2/3 innings, he had a 3.49 ERA in 53 games in 2024 for the M’s, and a 3.59 ERA in 52 games for Seattle in 2023.

Saucedo spent nearly two months on the Mariners’ minor league injured list with a strained left lat. He was activated by Tacoma on July 1.

The 25-year-old Vargas has been a solid piece of the Mariners’ bullpen this year, owning a 3.43 ERA in 42 appearances. He made his MLB debut in 2023 with Arizona, then spent 2024 with Triple-A Tacoma after coming to the Mariners in the trade that sent Eugenio Suárez to the Diamondbacks.

The Mariners have also set their lineup for Friday’s opener against the Tigers, with All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh serving as the designated hitter against Detroit ace Tarik Skubal. A former Seattle U standout, Skubal is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and is a strong candidate to start the All-Star Game next Tuesday.

Radio coverage of Friday’s game will begin on Seattle Sports at 3 p.m. with the pregame show. The television broadcast of the game will be on the Apple TV+ streaming app as opposed to the usual M’s TV home, ROOT Sports.
