Woo, Mariners get better of Red Sox ace to win 5th straight series

The Seattle Mariners tied a bow on a great road trip Thursday, with the offense providing what Bryan Woo needed to out-duel Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet for a 4-3 victory at Fenway Park.

The Mariners’ streak of series wins is now five, which includes three stops on the trip: Cincinnati, Toronto and Boston. In each of those last three series, the M’s rebounded with back-to-back wins after losing the opener.

Seattle, which now heads home to start a three-game set against the Miami Marlins on Friday night, owns a 14-11 record, buoyed by 10 wins in its last 13 games.

Three takeaways from Mariners’ rare series win in Boston

The M’s went to work with two outs in the first inning against Crochet, a 2024 All-Star with the White Sox who was traded to Boston in a winter blockbuster. With a runner on, Randy Arozarena came back from an 0-2 count to draw a nine-pitch walk, setting up Mitch Garver for a two-run double off the Green Monster in left-center.

Crochet had thrown 15 pitches when Arozarena came to the plate, but Seattle drove that pitch count up to 29 before the third out of the opening frame. And that continued to be a storyline thanks to what the Mariners did in the next inning.

Seattle sent six batters to the plate in the second, with singles by Ben Williamson and J.P. Crawford sandwiching a Leo Rivas walk to load the bases with no outs. Dylan Moore then scored Williamson with a sacrifice fly, and Julio Rodríguez brought Rivas home with a groundout to make it a 4-1 M’s advantage.

Meanwhile, Woo was rolling on the mound for Seattle – well, except for when Alex Bregman was at the plate. The Boston third baseman and former Houston Astros All-Star hit a solo homer in the first and an RBI single in the third. But Woo had little trouble with the rest of the Red Sox lineup, as the third-year right-hander limited Boston to three hits and a walk over six innings and 91 pitches, striking out eight.

Woo has thrown six innings or more in each of his five outings this season, four of which have been quality starts. Following Thursday’s win, he owns a 3.09 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, .207 opponent batting average, and 30 strikeouts to 11 walks over 32 innings.

Crochet, on the other hand, threw 110 pitches and labored to get through five innings. While he logged nine strikeouts, he gave up four earned runs on five hits and five walks.

Crochet entered Thursday with some of the best numbers for a starter in baseball with a 1.13 ERA and 0.906 WHIP in five starts.

Things got hairy in the eighth inning for Seattle, as Boston catcher Carlos Narváez sliced a 334-foot homer just inside Pesky’s Pole in right field for a solo homer off M’s reliever Gabe Speier. Bregman nearly did the same down the other line a few batters later against Trent Thornton, but it went foul, and second baseman Rivas made a nifty basket catch on a Bregman pop-up to shallow center to end the inning.

Andrés Muñoz struck out a pair and worked around a walk in a scoreless ninth to log his ninth save in nine opportunities – including two in less than 24 hours. Muñoz, a 2024 All-Star, has not allowed a run in 12 appearances (12 innings) this season.

Rodríguez had a personal milestone in the game, hitting an infield single in the sixth inning for his 500th career hit. It was nearly a web gem by Bregman, who dove to make the stop and rob Rodríguez of extra bases, but the speedy Rodríguez just beat the throw to first, a call that stood after a replay challenge.

With Thursday’s win, the Mariners moved with a half-game of the Texas Rangers (14-10) for first place in the AL West. Texas is set to play the Athletics (11-13) in Sacramento on Thursday night.
