Seahawks notes: Rice and Miller to play, Moffitt won’t

Coach Pete Carroll shared some positive and negative injury news after the Seahawks’ final full-pad practice of the week on Wednesday.

The good news: receiver Sidney Rice will see some action in Friday night’s preseason game at Kansas City. Rice has been brought along slowly through training camp after undergoing surgery on both shoulders in the offseason. Carroll said he’ll try to get Rice some time early in the game.

Tight end Zach Miller has been cleared to play Friday night as well. Miller sat out the last preseason game in Denver after suffering a mild concussion against Tennessee.

Carroll said right guard John Moffitt will not play Friday night, but he’s expected to start practicing again next week. Moffitt had surgery to remove “loose bodies” in his left elbow. Rookie J.R. Sweezy, a converted defensive lineman, will get the start in Moffitt’s place.

The not-so-good news concerns defensive back and special teams star Roy Lewis. Carroll said the former Washington Husky will undergo knee surgery to fix a problem which has been lingering through training camp. This is not the same knee Lewis injured last year.

More notes from Wednesday’s practice:

• Russell Wilson did most of the work with the first-team offense. He was fairly sharp on over-the-middle throws to Rice and Phil Bates. Wilson did have one poor throw to the right flat which was picked off by a leaping Richard Sherman.

• Matt Flynn was given a day off to rest his arm. He’s expected to play in the second half against the Chiefs. Carroll would not get into specifics about any playing time for Tarvaris Jackson or Josh Portis.

• Both Marshawn Lynch and Michael Robinson watched practice. Lynch has been suffering back spasms the past three days. It’s not clear whether he will play Friday night. Robinson is nursing a sore toe.

• On the defensive line, Jason Jones and Pep Levingston are both questionable with minor injuries, according to Carroll.

• Part of the practice got a little chippy with guys trying to fight for jobs and just getting tired of facing one another. Tight end Anthony McCoy told me he’s more than ready to get after players on a different team.

• Tight end Kellen Winslow and safety Earl Thomas had a heated verbal exchange during 1-on-1 drills. Winslow out-wrestled Thomas for a touchdown pass. The two exchanged a handshake and went about the rest of the practice.

• For all you fashionistas, Carroll used Twitter this morning to give hints about Friday night’s uniform color scheme. He tweeted the song of the day is “Grey Road” by Dave Matthews. So, the Seahawks for the first time will wear grey pants and white tops.
