Seahawks Football 101: The defense’s crucial adjustment to Giants’ run game

Dec 8, 2020, 4:33 PM

Forget for a second that the Seahawks lost to the Giants on Sunday, or that the offense had its worst day of the season against New York.

Seahawks Q&A: What’s going on with Russell Wilson and the offense?

Why? Because in that game, the Seahawks had a pretty stellar showing on defense. And even though there was a tough stretch of plays in the third quarter, there was something pretty impressive about what Seattle did after that.

Running back Wayne Gallman broke free for a 60-yard run against the Seahawks in the third quarter, and for the rest of that drive and the one following it, Seattle had trouble figuring out how to stop the Giants’ rushing attack as New York scored 14 straight points. In the fourth quarter, however, the Giants were held to just a field goal, and the game ended with Seattle having yielded only 17 points to New York – an amount that is usually no problem for the Seahawks’ offense to beat (just not this time).

So what happened after New York’s two touchdown drives? That’s what 710 ESPN Seattle’s Dave Wyman is here for. In this week’s edition of Football 101, the co-host of Wyman and Bob, Seahawks Radio Network color commentator and former NFL linebacker breaks down what went wrong on Gallman’s run and how Seattle corrected the mistake when the Giants tried to go back to that well again later in the game.
