Kade Anderson on debut: ‘I had my D+ stuff’

Most baseball teams look for a soft landing for their pitching prospects to make their MLB debut, but sometimes circumstance keeps that from happening.

Highly regarded Seattle Mariners prospect Kade Anderson found himself in the latter situation last Saturday.

With Bryan Woo needing to have his start pushed back due to shoulder soreness, the M’s turned to the left-handed Anderson to make his debut against a Chicago Cubs squad that has been baseball’s best against left-handed pitching this season.

Anderson nearly lasted six innings but had his day ended by back-to-back solo homers with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. He finished with a final line of three runs, five hits and two walks allowed with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

While it was a solid debut considering the opponent, Anderson told Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob on Wednesday he’s eager to get back out on the mound after what he described having his “D+ stuff.”

“I think I got away with a lot more stuff than what the stat line (says). I think I had my D+ stuff that day,” Anderson said. “So, it’s kind of a good feeling to know that even on the days where you don’t really have it, you can kind of get away with stuff. It’s just a game of baseball and the ebbs and flows of everything. I’m just excited to go out there and to have the A+ stuff and be in the zone more than I did last time and once again, just continue to learn from each and every outing.”

Anderson will make his second career start at Saturday when the Mariners continue their series at the Toronto Blue Jays.
