Lineups: Danny Valencia scratched from rubber match with Rangers
May 7, 2017, 12:09 PM
First baseman Danny Valencia was scratched from the Mariners starting lineup Sunday, with Taylor Motter taking his spot at first base.
Valencia has been hot at the plate of late, batting .353 with eight runs, three home runs, seven RBIs and a stolen base in his last nine games. He has had three multi-hit games during that span. Motter recorded his fifth game this season with multiple extra-base hits during Seattle’s 8-2 win over Texas as a left fielder on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, the Mariners swapped relievers, calling up righty Christian Bergman from Triple-A Tacoma and optioning Rob Whalen to the Rainiers. Bergman will be available for Sunday’s game.
Seattle also transferred right-handed reliever Shae Simmons from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list due to a right elbow strain.
Bergman, 29, was 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA, with 24 strikeouts in five starts with Tacoma. He signed with Seattle as a minor-league free on Dec. 1, 2016 after spending the previous seven seasons in the Colorado organization.
Coverage begins for 1:10 p.m. game on 710 ESPN Seattle at noon.
