Mariners let assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes go
The Mariners, who rank last in MLB in batting and slugging, have made a change at an offensive coaching position.

The Seattle Mariners have relieved assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes of his duties, the team announced late Thursday morning.
Seattle Mariners’ recently DFA’d utility man clears waivers
Ed Paparella, who has been Seattle’s hitting coordinator mainly focused on the minor leagues, will take Magallanes’ place on the Mariners’ coaching staff.
The move comes a day after the Mariners dropped back under .500 with a 5-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The Mariners’ offense has scored three runs or less in the three of their six games since the MLB All-Star break, and they needed a 10th inning to score four runs in another of those games.
The Mariners entered Thursday ranking last out of the 30 MLB teams in batting average (.229) and slugging (.377), 29th in runs (415), tied for 28th in OPS (.687), and 24th in on-base (.310).
The 56-year-old Magallanes was in his second season with the Mariners. He came to Seattle along with major league hitting coach Kevin Seitzer from the Atlanta Braves.
Magallanes, who served as Team Mexico hitting coach in both the 2023 and 2026 World Baseball Classic, was an MLB Draft pick in the 50th round by the Mariners and played three seasons as an infielder in the Seattle farm system.
The 31-year-old Paparella played in college as an outfielder at South Alabama from 2016-19 and signed with the Mariners on a minor league contract in 2021, but transitioned that year to a coaching role in the M’s organization. He was previously a hitting strategist for the Mariners working with the player development, high performance and analytics departments.
The Mariners are off Thursday before starting a road series against the Texas Rangers at 5:05 p.m. Friday. The 51-52 M’s sit a half-game back of Texas (51-51) for first place in the AL West.
