Bumpus: Should Seahawks get Sam Darnold after Mayfield trade?
Jul 7, 2022, 1:17 PM
Baker Mayfield won’t be the next Seahawks quarterback. Does his trade to the Carolina Panthers open the door to a different possibility for the Seahawks, though?
Carolina already had a starting quarterback on its roster before getting Mayfield: Sam Darnold, a USC product who was taken third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
After three seasons serving as the Jets’ primary QB, Darnold was traded to the Panthers in April 2021 and spent last season calling the signals for Carolina. Apparently that one year was enough, however, with the Panthers moving on to Mayfield after Darnold went 4-7 in 11 starts for the team.
Should the Seahawks be the next team to take a chance on Darnold and install him into a battle with Geno Smith and Drew Lock to replace Russell Wilson? Michael Bumpus, a former Seahawks wide receiver who is now a host of Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy and Seahawks Radio Network broadcasts, tackles the question in his latest Hawks breakdown video, which you can watch at the top of this post.
