Heaps’ Seahawks Chalk Talk: Why Tyler Lockett keeps getting better

Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett is off to the best start of his career and well on pace for a third straight 1,000-yard season. How does he keep getting better? Jake Heaps explains in this week's brand new edition of Chalk Talk.

Even though the Seahawks are 1-1 on the 2021 season following their overtime loss at home to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, there’s one player who continued to shine in Week 2: wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

Two quick and two big fixes for Seahawks after ugly Week 2 loss

After hauling in four catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns in Seattle’s season-opening win over the Indianapolis Colts, Lockett followed up with an even bigger game against the Titans, making eight receptions for 178 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown. The 178-yard day was his second-highest single-game total, topped only by a 200-yard performance in October 2020 against Arizona (which was coincidentally another Seahawks overtime loss).

Lockett has 12 catches for 278 yards and three touchdowns through the Seahawks’ first two games, ranking second in the NFL in receiving yards, tying for second in receiving touchdowns, and sitting at fourth in yards per catch (23.2).

Now in his seventh NFL season, the 28-year-old Lockett is certainly off to the best start of his career and well on pace to his third straight 1,000-yard campaign. How does he keep getting better? That’s what 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake Heaps, a former Seahawks quarterback, explains in this week’s brand new edition of Chalk Talk.

In the video, Heaps breaks down two of Lockett’s biggest plays from Sunday. First up is this 51-yard catch in the first quarter that helped set up a Seattle field goal:

After that, Heaps takes a close look at Lockett’s 63-yard touchdown, which put Seattle ahead 10-3 in the second quarter.
