Report: Brandon Roy to return as boys basketball coach at Garfield

Brandon Roy is set to return to his former position as head boys basketball coach at Garfield High School, according to a report from KOMO News.

The outlet reported Roy is set to be introduced as Garfield’s new boys hoops coach during a press conference at the school 1 p.m. Thursday. Garfield Principal Dr. Tarance Hart, Roy, and Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Ben Shuldiner are scheduled to speak at the event.

Roy is a former NBA player and Garfield alumnus. He previously won three Class 3A state titles (2018, 2020 and 2023) as his alma mater’s head coach, and another as the head coach at Nathan Hale in 2017. But he was fired by Garfield at the start of the 2025-26 school year following allegations that he was a part of a recruiting violation that offered an apartment, a car, $2,000, and paid driver’s education to an Auburn Mountainview student if he would transfer to Garfield to play basketball.

Roy has denied those allegations.

Without Roy at the helm this past season, Garfield finished with a 9-15 record, its worst mark in more than 20 years.

Roy is one of the most decorated basketball players to come out of Washington. He was a four-year standout for the UW Huskies, earning Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 2005-06.

UW retired Roy’s No. 3 jersey during a ceremony at Hec Edmundson Pavilion in January 2009.

The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Roy sixth overall in the 2006 NBA Draft before trading his draft rights to the Portland Trail Blazers. Roy spent five of his six pro seasons in Portland, earning three All-Star nods, two All-NBA selections and Rookie of the Year honors.
