Seattle Kraken trade just before NHL deadline for Bobby McMann

Just as it appeared the NHL trade deadline would pass by without the Seattle Kraken making an addition, they swung a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs for 29-year-old forward Bobby McMann.

The Kraken sent a 2027 second-round NHL Draft pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Maple Leafs in exchange.

“We’re really excited to have Bobby in Seattle,” Kraken general manager Jason Botterill said in a press release. “He’s a big, strong forward who knows how to put the puck in the net. We think he’ll be a great fit with our group down the stretch.”

McMann, an Alberta native in his fourth NHL season, checks in at 6 foot 2 and 217 pounds. With 32 points on 19 goals and 13 assists in 60 games this season, he’s just shy of his career-highs in points (34), goals (20) and assists (14), all of which he set last season.

The 2027 second-round pick going to Toronto is conditional, as it will be the later selection of the Winnipeg or Columbus 2027 second-round picks that Seattle acquired in previous trades. The fourth-round pick Seattle is giving up comes from a previous deal with Anaheim.

There had been rumors of the Kraken being interested in a top-six forward, with a willingness to part with 22-year-old former No. 4 overall NHL Draft pick Shane Wright to do so, but that did not come to fruition.

Seattle, which hosts the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m. Saturday night, also locked up captain Jordan Eberle on Friday with a two-year extension.

The Kraken entered Friday with a 29-23-9 record for 67 points in the standings, giving them a three-point lead over the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings for the second and final wild card from the Western Conference to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 21 games to go in the regular season. Seattle is looking to reach the postseason for the second time in the team’s five-year history.
