Wyman: Observations from Seahawks’ ‘total domination’ of 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks laid a playoff beatdown on the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night reminiscent of their Super Bowl XLVIII victory over the Denver Broncos.

They returned the opening kickoff a touchdown and led wire-to-wire while dominating in all three phases of the game in a 41-6 blowout of the Niners to reach the NFC title game, which matched the 43-8 Super Bowl win for their largest margin of victory in a playoff game.

Seahawks Radio Network color analyst and former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman shared his observations from the Seattle’s emphatic win of San Francisco.

“Just total domination by the Seahawks,” Wyman said. “I love all the talking that was going on. I felt like the 49ers were trying to talk their way into a win. It just wasn’t going to happen. So I love that part of it.”

‘That works in the playoffs’

Giveaways had been an issue for the Seahawks this year, but they weren’t for a second game in a row against the 49ers. Sam Darnold and the offense played a turnover-free game. Meanwhile, the run game continued its late-season surge.

Kenneth Walker III rushed for 116 yards and three TDs as Seattle piled up 175 yards on the ground for its fourth straight game with at least 163 rushing yards.

“Zero giveaways two weeks in a row. That is huge. And then the other thing is you run for 175 yards. Those are two things that get you into the playoffs and that work in the playoffs,” Wyman said.

One reason for concern

The Seahawks’ big day on the ground did come with some bad news when running back Zach Charbonnet exited the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. Head coach Mike Macdonald said postgame that Charbonnet will get imaging done on his knee, but he’s optimistic about the third-year back’s status moving forward.

“Only bummer is Charbonnet. I thought K9 looked great, he looked electric. They just kept chipping away at the run game and then it finally just burst open for them. But it’s just a shame with Charbonnet getting that injury, but we’ll see. Hopefully it’s not anything that’s too bad,” Wyman said.

Two shoutouts

Wyman highlighted defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence and general manager John Schneider after the win.

Lawrence forced two fumbles, including a strip sack of Brock Purdy, and tied for a team-high six pressures with Leonard Williams, according to Pro Football Focus. Lawrence has forced five fumbles over his past seven games.

“DeMarcus Lawrence is ridiculous, how he is like a bigger version of Witherspoon. He just flies around the field, and I love that he got the strip sack,” Wyman said. “He’s just been instrumental to what they’ve done.”

The signing of Lawrence was part of Wyman’s reasoning for highlighting Schneider.

“Getting Rashid Shaheed was a great move. Same thing with DeMarcus Lawrence. A couple years ago, he went and got Leonard Williams. He has just done a phenomenal job. I’d say he’s Executive of the Year.”
