Commanders choose their QB to face Seahawks this week

The Seattle Seahawks aren’t alone in having an uncertain quarterback situation going into next Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

One-time Pro Bowl QB Jayden Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow that knocked him out of Washington’s Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. A day later, the team confirmed that backup Marcus Mariota will now face the defending champs this weekend in the Commanders’ home opener.

Washington head coach Dan Quinn, a former Seahawks defensive coordinator, made the announcement shortly after NFL insiders reported updates on Daniels.

ESPN and NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that Daniels underwent imaging on the injured elbow Monday “and will now consult with a variety of experts over the next few days as is team protocol.” Quinn confirmed that Daniels had imaging done and is set to be seen by specialists on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Mariota was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Oregon by the Tennessee Titans. Now in his 12th pro season, he has played in 105 career games, including 82 starts. He started eight times and played 11 games total last season for Washington in place of Daniels, who suffered a similar left elbow injury in a loss to the Seahawks in early November.

Mariota completed 11 of 16 pass attempts for 111 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions after taking over for Daniels against Dallas on Sunday. In 2025, he completed 61.2% of his pass attempts for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

It very well could be a battle of backup QBs between the 2-0 Seahawks and 0-2 Commanders. Drew Lock played his second game Sunday as Seattle’s QB in place of Sam Darnold, who is nursing a glute injury suffered on the first offensive series of the season. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald told Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk on Monday morning there is a “chance” Darnold could return this week, but there may not be too much of a rush as Lock has excelled since being thrust into action.

Sunday’s Seahawks-Commanders game is set for a 10 a.m. kickoff on Seattle Sports, with the Seahawks Radio Network pregame show starting at 7 a.m.
