With starting quarterback Sam Darnold sidelined by a quad injury, the Seattle Seahawks signed quarterback Adrian Martinez to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Seattle also signed third-year linebacker Jamie Sheriff to the practice squad. To make room, the Seahawks released linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo and wide receiver Malick Meiga from the practice squad.
Earlier in the day, head coach Mike Macdonald announced that Darnold is “week to week” and will miss Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. The Seahawks plan to start backup quarterback Drew Lock against Arizona, with third-stringer Jalen Milroe next in line. However, Lock has been inactive for the past two games due to a right elbow injury.
Martinez gives Seattle a third quarterback option behind Lock and Milroe.
Martinez made 47 starts over a five-year college career at Nebraska (2018-21) and Kansas State (2022). Since going undrafted in 2023, Martinez has spent time with the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets. Martinez’s lone NFL snap was a kneeldown to cap a 49ers win over the New York Giants last season.
In 2024, Martinez led the Birmingham Stallions to the United Football League title and was named the league’s MVP.
Sheriff, who initially signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted rookie in 2024, burst onto the scene with three sacks that preseason. He spent most of 2024 and 2025 on Seattle’s practice squad, appearing in one game each season.
Sheriff spent training camp and the preseason with the Seahawks this summer, but was waived during 53-man roster cutdowns. He signed with the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad on Sept. 3, but was released on Oct. 13.
