Seahawks star JSN named NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year

After one of the best receiving seasons in NFL history, Seattle Seahawks star wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba was named the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year during the league’s annual award ceremony Thursday night in San Francisco.

Smith-Njigba is the fourth player in Seahawks history to win an NFL Offensive or Defensive Player of the Year award. The others were running back Shaun Alexander (2005), Hall of Fame defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy (1992) and Hall of Fame safety Kenny Easley (1984).

Smith-Njigba led the NFL with a franchise-record 1,793 receiving yards this season, which was the eighth-most in a single season in league history. He became just the third NFL player to top 1,700 receiving yards at age 23 or younger, joining Isaac Bruce and Justin Jefferson. He also tallied a franchise-record 119 receptions and 10 touchdown catches.

In the voting, Smith-Njigba received 272 points and 14 of 50 first-place votes. San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey finished second (223 points, 12 first-place votes), Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua was third (170 points, 8 first-place votes) and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson was fourth (168 points, 6 first-place votes).

A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL submitted their award votes before the playoffs began. A first-place vote counted for 10 points, a second-place vote for five points, a third-place vote for three points, a fourth-place vote for two points and a fifth-place vote for one point.

Other Seahawks award finalists

Smith-Njigba was one of four players or coaches from the Super Bowl-bound Seahawks who were AP award finalists.

Seahawks defensive back Nick Emmanwori finished second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting (199 points, 7 first-place votes). Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger was the runaway winner for the award (441 points, 40 first-place votes).

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald finished third in Coach of the Year voting (191 points, 8 first-place votes). Fellow Super Bowl-bound New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel won the award (302 points, 19 first-place votes), while Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen finished second (239 points, 16 first-place votes).

Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak finished fourth in Assistant Coach of the Year voting. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels won the award, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph finished second and Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores was third.
